Credit-card payoff planner — target current card balance

Estimate card payoff dates, interest and how extra payments change the schedule. Numerically solve for current card balance from a desired estimated months to debt-free, within your chosen search range.

Five planning modes, one calculator topic

These modes share an underlying model, not five unrelated formulas. This advanced mode is excluded from search indexing. Visit the main credit-card payoff planner calculator for the topic overview.

Assumptions to check

  • No new purchases, promotional rate changes or daily-balance interest. Combined-balance debt estimates are not account-by-account snowball or avalanche schedules.
  • Requires a monotonic headline response within the chosen range. Rounded outputs, thresholds and discontinuities limit precision.

How this is calculated

Bounded bisection search for current card balance, holding other inputs constant. Monthly interest = balance × APR / 12; subtract the entered payment and extra principal. Annual fees are paid separately.
  1. 1Evaluate the chosen range and numerically narrow the solution.
  2. 2Return the closest input at the allowed precision; a whole-unit solution may not exactly reach the target.

Assumptions and limits

  • Assumes no new purchases, penalty APR, promotional balance or payment timing changes.
  • No new purchases, promotional rate changes or daily-balance interest. Combined-balance debt estimates are not account-by-account snowball or avalanche schedules.
  • Requires a monotonic headline response within the chosen range. Rounded outputs, thresholds and discontinuities limit precision.

Understanding credit-card payoff planner — target current card balance

What this calculation is for

A fixed-payment debt plan answers when an existing balance might be repaid if you stop adding charges. It differs from a loan tool that calculates the payment for a chosen term: here, you supply the payment and observe the payoff path.

How the method works

Each month, interest is added using APR divided by 12, then the stated payment and extra amount are applied. If payment does not exceed interest, the plan cannot amortize. Annual account fees are shown separately rather than silently added to financed principal.

A worked example

A $1,200 balance with 0% interest and a $100 monthly payment takes 12 months with no new spending. A higher APR requires either more time or more money; paying only $100 is not a guarantee of the same payoff date.

Assumptions and real-world differences

Credit cards commonly use daily balances and variable rates. Minimum payments may change each month. The combined-balance version uses a weighted rate and is not a true multi-account avalanche or snowball optimizer.

Solving for current card balance

This reverse calculation searches for a current card balance that makes the model’s headline measure approach your target. Set a lower and upper search bound, leave the other assumptions consistent, and inspect the achieved result and target difference. The returned number is an input, not the original model’s output. A bounded solution can be approximate when the allowed input step rounds values.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep making purchases?
This model assumes no new purchases. Ongoing spending needs a separate cash-flow assumption.
Why is there no payoff date?
The payment may be too small or the selected horizon may end before repayment is complete.
Why might there be no exact required current card balance?
The target may be outside the search range. Rounded outputs, whole-item counts, tax thresholds and flat responses can also prevent an exact solution. Bisection requires a monotonic response within the chosen range; do not interpret a failed search as a real-world impossibility.
