Understanding student-loan planner — sensitivity table

What this calculation is for
A loan-payment calculation connects principal, APR and repayment term to a scheduled payment. It helps compare financing offers without treating a lower monthly payment as automatically cheaper. A longer term can reduce the payment while increasing lifetime interest.
How the method works
The model uses fixed-rate amortization: payment equals principal times the periodic rate divided by one minus the discount factor for all payments. At zero interest, principal is divided by payment count. Detailed tools simulate additional principal payments and show the remaining balance.
A worked example
A $12,000 loan repaid over 12 months at 0% requires $1,000 of principal each month. At a positive APR, the payment is higher. An extra payment should reduce principal, not merely prepay the next bill.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Real lenders can use daily interest, different fee treatment, irregular first periods or prepayment rules. Financed origination fees and separately paid annual fees are labeled differently. A loan budget is a comparison value, not a change to the contractual payment.
Reading the loan principal sensitivity table
The tool evaluates the same model across a range of loan principal values while holding other assumptions constant. Choose a realistic low value, high value and number of points. Each row reports the same headline measure; the table is a set of conditional calculations, not a probability distribution or a forecast. Input-step rounding can make nearby rows equal.

Sensitivity analysis: 5 comparison points
Loan principal ranges from $21,000 to $63,000.

Frequently asked questions
- Does APR always equal the note rate?
- No. Disclosed APR can reflect certain fees; verify the contract’s interest and fee definitions.
- Why does extra principal save interest?
- It reduces the balance on which later interest is calculated. Check that your lender applies it to principal.
- Does the most favorable row show the most likely outcome?
- No. The table assigns no likelihood to any row. It shows how the result responds to the chosen assumption, and you remain responsible for selecting a plausible range.
