Understanding meal cost per serving — sensitivity table
Everyday editorial team · GEOINNOVATION CO., LTD · Published · Updated
What this calculation is for
A cost-per-serving estimate includes both ingredients and the preparation resources you choose to value. For a small food business, omitting packaging or labor can make an apparently profitable price misleading.
How the method works
Ingredient costs, valued labor time and named overhead are divided by produced servings. A markup comparison is then applied where requested; markup should not be confused with profit margin. The displayed model uses: Cost per serving includes ingredients, labor and overhead; optional markup gives a comparison price.
A worked example
For an illustrative meal cost per serving scenario, use Total ingredient cost: 22 $; Servings produced: 8 servings; Preparation and cook time: 2 hours; Hourly labor value: 20 $/hour; Packaging and overhead: 3 $; Target markup: 25 %. The modeled estimated cost per serving is $8.13. These are example assumptions, not current prices, official benefit amounts or personalized advice.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Waste, unsold portions, taxes, delivery-platform fees and fixed business expenses may require extra allowances. The result is not a nutrition estimate or a guaranteed selling price. Ingredient costs, waste, taxes and labor are user estimates; not a nutrition calculation.
Reading the total ingredient cost sensitivity table
The tool evaluates the same model across a range of total ingredient cost values while holding other assumptions constant. Choose a realistic low value, high value and number of points. Each row reports the same headline measure; the table is a set of conditional calculations, not a probability distribution or a forecast. Input-step rounding can make nearby rows equal.

Frequently asked questions
- Should household cooking time be priced as labor?
- It depends on the decision. Enter zero for a cash-only home budget, or a chosen hourly value for an economic-cost comparison.
- Which inputs should I check before using this meal cost per serving estimate?
- Check total ingredient cost, servings produced, preparation and cook time, hourly labor value, packaging and overhead, target markup. Match each field’s unit and time period, then compare the detailed rows rather than treating the headline alone as the complete answer.
- Does the most favorable row show the most likely outcome?
- No. The table assigns no likelihood to any row. It shows how the result responds to the chosen assumption, and you remain responsible for selecting a plausible range.
