Understanding salary and hourly pay — target annual base salary
Everyday editorial team · GEOINNOVATION CO., LTD · Published · Updated
What this calculation is for
An hourly equivalent makes job offers easier to compare when paid hours and paid weeks differ. A salary divided by 2,080 assumes 40 hours every week for 52 paid weeks; it is not appropriate for every work schedule. Use your actual paid time and keep bonus assumptions separate.
How the method works
Annual cash compensation is divided by paid hours. Detailed salary tools allow a bonus and subtract entered unpaid hours from weekly hours multiplied by paid weeks. The basic bidirectional tool can instead annualize an hourly wage using the selected schedule.
A worked example
At $30 per hour, 40 paid hours and 50 paid weeks produce $60,000 before a bonus. Using 52 weeks instead gives $62,400. That difference is a schedule assumption, not additional productivity.
Assumptions and real-world differences
This is a cash-pay comparison, not an overtime eligibility or employment classification determination. Health benefits, retirement matches, equity awards and job expenses are excluded unless a named field includes them. Paid hours must remain positive.
Solving for annual base salary
This reverse calculation searches for a annual base salary that makes the model’s headline measure approach your target. Set a lower and upper search bound, leave the other assumptions consistent, and inspect the achieved result and target difference. The returned number is an input, not the original model’s output. A bounded solution can be approximate when the allowed input step rounds values.
Reproduce this tool’s example
These fixed example inputs are independent of edits you make above. Enter them in this tool to reproduce the result, then replace them with your own assumptions.

Frequently asked questions
- Does salaried pay automatically include overtime?
- No. Legal eligibility and employer agreements must be checked separately.
- How do I handle unpaid leave?
- Reduce paid weeks or use unpaid hours, but avoid counting the same unpaid time twice.
- Why might there be no exact required annual base salary?
- The target may be outside the search range. Rounded outputs, whole-item counts, tax thresholds and flat responses can also prevent an exact solution. Bisection requires a monotonic response within the chosen range; do not interpret a failed search as a real-world impossibility.
