Understanding savings goal calculator — two-scenario comparison
Everyday editorial team · GEOINNOVATION CO., LTD · Published · Updated
What this calculation is for
A savings-goal projection compares a target with existing money, regular deposits, interest and account fees. It is useful for a purchase that has a date, such as moving or education. Test both the balance you can reach and the contribution needed, rather than looking only at a favorable rate.
How the method works
The account is projected on a monthly schedule using the entered annual effective yield, month-end contributions and recurring fees. The resulting balance is compared with the target after the selected horizon. Reverse-solving changes one named input while holding the others fixed.
A worked example
With no interest or fees, a $6,000 goal in 12 months needs $500 per month when starting from zero. Starting with $1,200 reduces that simple contribution requirement to $400.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Bank rates and fees can change, taxes may reduce interest and goals may rise with prices. A fee exceeding the monthly deposit can erode the balance. Reverse-solving is bounded by your search range and does not select a bank or recommend an account.
Building two independent scenarios
Scenario A and Scenario B each have a complete set of inputs for this savings goal calculator calculation. Change several inputs in B when comparing genuinely different plans, then inspect the B-minus-A headline difference and the detailed rows. When multiple inputs change, the total difference cannot be attributed to just one of them.

These fixed example inputs are independent of edits you make above. Enter them in this tool to reproduce the result, then replace them with your own assumptions.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the goal automatically rise with inflation?
- Only if a specific input or tool models that increase. Otherwise the target is fixed.
- Why is the solver unable to find a target?
- The chosen range may not reach it, or the selected input may have a rounded or threshold-based effect.
- Why is this different from the one-factor comparison?
- The one-factor tool changes only starting balance. This version lets all model inputs differ, so it is more flexible but does not isolate the effect of any single change.
