Auto-loan payment planner — compare vehicle price plus add-ons

Estimate monthly vehicle payments after trade-in, taxes, fees and additional principal. Compare a change in vehicle price plus add-ons while keeping every other input identical.

Five planning modes, one calculator topic

These modes share an underlying model, not five unrelated formulas. This advanced mode is excluded from search indexing. Visit the main auto-loan payment planner calculator for the topic overview.

Assumptions to check

  • Fixed APR and regular payments assumed; annual fees are shown separately and not financed. An entered monthly budget is a comparison figure, not the scheduled payment.

How this is calculated

Run the same model for each set of assumptions. Fixed-rate monthly amortization with entered financed fees and optional extra principal.
  1. 1Keep baseline settings fixed for a one-input comparison, or enter all settings separately for a two-scenario comparison.

Assumptions and limits

  • Actual APR, sales tax, add-ons, lender fees, trade-in equity and loan terms vary.

Understanding auto-loan payment planner — compare vehicle price plus add-ons

What this calculation is for

A loan-payment calculation connects principal, APR and repayment term to a scheduled payment. It helps compare financing offers without treating a lower monthly payment as automatically cheaper. A longer term can reduce the payment while increasing lifetime interest.

How the method works

The model uses fixed-rate amortization: payment equals principal times the periodic rate divided by one minus the discount factor for all payments. At zero interest, principal is divided by payment count. Detailed tools simulate additional principal payments and show the remaining balance.

A worked example

A $12,000 loan repaid over 12 months at 0% requires $1,000 of principal each month. At a positive APR, the payment is higher. An extra payment should reduce principal, not merely prepay the next bill.

Assumptions and real-world differences

Real lenders can use daily interest, different fee treatment, irregular first periods or prepayment rules. Financed origination fees and separately paid annual fees are labeled differently. A loan budget is a comparison value, not a change to the contractual payment.

Comparing two vehicle price plus add-ons assumptions

The baseline and alternative calculations change vehicle price plus add-ons while keeping the remaining model inputs the same. This isolates that particular assumption rather than comparing two completely different plans. Read both detailed outcomes and the B-minus-A difference in the headline’s units. A larger number is not automatically better: a larger cost and a larger savings balance have opposite interpretations.

Frequently asked questions

Does APR always equal the note rate?
No. Disclosed APR can reflect certain fees; verify the contract’s interest and fee definitions.
Why does extra principal save interest?
It reduces the balance on which later interest is calculated. Check that your lender applies it to principal.
Can I also change other assumptions in the alternative?
This one-factor comparison deliberately holds them fixed. Use the two-scenario version when rates, costs, timing or several household inputs all differ.
