Vehicle total-cost estimate — target vehicle purchase price

Estimate ownership cost from purchase, financing, mileage, fuel, insurance and depreciation. Numerically solve for vehicle purchase price from a desired estimated monthly vehicle cost, within your chosen search range.

Five planning modes, one calculator topic

These modes share an underlying model, not five unrelated formulas. This advanced mode is excluded from search indexing. Visit the main vehicle total-cost estimate calculator for the topic overview.

Assumptions to check

  • Vehicle taxes, depreciation, repairs, registration and resale value can change total ownership cost.
  • Requires a monotonic headline response within the chosen range. Rounded outputs, thresholds and discontinuities limit precision.

How this is calculated

Bounded bisection search for vehicle purchase price, holding other inputs constant. Combine amortized loan, fuel use and entered monthly recurring costs.
  1. 1Evaluate the chosen range and numerically narrow the solution.
  2. 2Return the closest input at the allowed precision; a whole-unit solution may not exactly reach the target.

Assumptions and limits

  • Depreciation, registration, repairs, financing fees and resale value vary by vehicle and location.
  • Vehicle taxes, depreciation, repairs, registration and resale value can change total ownership cost.
  • Requires a monotonic headline response within the chosen range. Rounded outputs, thresholds and discontinuities limit precision.

Understanding vehicle total-cost estimate — target vehicle purchase price

What this calculation is for

Vehicle ownership combines financing, depreciation and operating costs. Looking only at the loan payment can obscure the effect of mileage, insurance and future resale value. Use the same ownership period when comparing two vehicles.

How the method works

The estimate annualizes or spreads the entered purchase, resale and ownership assumptions, then includes the named recurring costs such as insurance, maintenance, registration and fuel. Read the result labels to avoid adding a loan’s principal cost again when the vehicle’s purchase cost is already represented.

A worked example

An extra $75 per month in insurance adds $900 per year even if two vehicles have the same payment. A lower fuel bill may or may not offset that difference depending on annual mileage.

Assumptions and real-world differences

Resale values, repair needs, fees and interest rates are user assumptions, not vehicle quotes. Financing cash flow and depreciation are different views of cost and should not be combined indiscriminately. Taxes and costs appear only where the form explicitly includes them.

Solving for vehicle purchase price

This reverse calculation searches for a vehicle purchase price that makes the model’s headline measure approach your target. Set a lower and upper search bound, leave the other assumptions consistent, and inspect the achieved result and target difference. The returned number is an input, not the original model’s output. A bounded solution can be approximate when the allowed input step rounds values.

Frequently asked questions

Is depreciation a cash payment?
Not each month, but the change in vehicle value affects the total economic cost of ownership.
Can I compare an electric vehicle here?
Use the dedicated charging-cost tools for electricity-specific operating assumptions.
Why might there be no exact required vehicle purchase price?
The target may be outside the search range. Rounded outputs, whole-item counts, tax thresholds and flat responses can also prevent an exact solution. Bisection requires a monotonic response within the chosen range; do not interpret a failed search as a real-world impossibility.
