Understanding commute cost planner — sensitivity table

What this calculation is for
A commute-cost comparison annualizes a repeatable travel schedule. It shows fuel and parking separately from a transit alternative so the two transport options are not accidentally added together.
How the method works
One-way distance is doubled, multiplied by commute days and work weeks, and converted to fuel cost using MPG. Daily parking and tolls are added; transit is annualized independently. The displayed model uses: Annualize return-drive fuel, parking/tolls and public transit from commute frequency.
A worked example
For an illustrative commute cost planner scenario, use One-way commute distance: 18 miles; Commute days each week: 5 days; Work weeks per year: 48 weeks; Vehicle MPG: 30 MPG; Fuel price: 3.5 $/gallon; Daily parking and tolls: 12 $; Weekly public-transit fare: 50 $. The modeled annual driving commute cost is $3,888. These are example assumptions, not current prices, official benefit amounts or personalized advice.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Driving depreciation, insurance, maintenance and the value of travel time are excluded. Hybrid work and holidays should be reflected in days and weeks rather than assumed to match all 52 weeks. Excludes car depreciation, taxes, maintenance and time value unless explicitly entered.
Reading the one-way commute distance sensitivity table
The tool evaluates the same model across a range of one-way commute distance values while holding other assumptions constant. Choose a realistic low value, high value and number of points. Each row reports the same headline measure; the table is a set of conditional calculations, not a probability distribution or a forecast. Input-step rounding can make nearby rows equal.

Sensitivity analysis: 5 comparison points
One-way commute distance ranges from 9 miles to 27 miles.
- One-way commute distance: 9 miles: $3,384
- One-way commute distance: 13.5 miles: $3,636
- One-way commute distance: 18 miles: $3,888
Frequently asked questions
- Should the distance field contain both directions?
- No when it says one-way. The model doubles that value for a round trip.
- Which inputs should I check before using this commute cost planner estimate?
- Check one-way commute distance, commute days each week, work weeks per year, vehicle mpg, fuel price, daily parking and tolls, weekly public-transit fare. Match each field’s unit and time period, then compare the detailed rows rather than treating the headline alone as the complete answer.
- Does the most favorable row show the most likely outcome?
- No. The table assigns no likelihood to any row. It shows how the result responds to the chosen assumption, and you remain responsible for selecting a plausible range.
