Understanding fuel and trip cost — target miles driven

What this calculation is for
A fuel budget translates expected driving into gallons and dollars. It helps compare a commute, trip or vehicle-efficiency change while keeping the fuel-price assumption visible. Use actual long-term mileage when available rather than one unusually efficient journey.
How the method works
Distance is divided by miles per gallon to estimate fuel consumption. Gallons are multiplied by the entered price, then any named return-trip or frequency assumptions are applied. A one-way distance should not be mistaken for a round-trip distance.
A worked example
A 300-mile trip at 30 MPG uses about 10 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon the modeled fuel bill is $35. Reducing efficiency to 25 MPG raises consumption to 12 gallons for the same distance.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Traffic, temperature, speed, terrain, cargo and driving style affect real consumption. The calculator does not fetch pump prices or include maintenance, depreciation, parking and tolls unless their fields appear in the selected tool.
Solving for miles driven
This reverse calculation searches for a miles driven that makes the model’s headline measure approach your target. Set a lower and upper search bound, leave the other assumptions consistent, and inspect the achieved result and target difference. The returned number is an input, not the original model’s output. A bounded solution can be approximate when the allowed input step rounds values.
Reproduce this tool’s example
These fixed example inputs are independent of edits you make above. Enter them in this tool to reproduce the result, then replace them with your own assumptions.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I enter MPGe as MPG?
- No. MPGe is an energy-equivalence measure; use a charging-cost calculator for an electric bill estimate.
- Is the result a total trip cost?
- Usually it is fuel only. Add lodging, food and tolls with a road-trip budget tool.
- Why might there be no exact required miles driven?
- The target may be outside the search range. Rounded outputs, whole-item counts, tax thresholds and flat responses can also prevent an exact solution. Bisection requires a monotonic response within the chosen range; do not interpret a failed search as a real-world impossibility.
