Understanding education budget planner — sensitivity table

What this calculation is for
A term budget combines school charges with the living and materials costs a student must fund. It is useful for identifying a cash gap that a tuition-only estimate would miss.
How the method works
Credit hours times cost per credit gives tuition. Term fees, housing, books, transport and personal allowances are added, then the entered aid is subtracted. The displayed model uses: Sum term tuition and living expenses, then subtract grants or aid you enter.
A worked example
For an illustrative education budget planner scenario, use Credit hours: 15 credits; Tuition per credit: 500 $; Term fees: 1200 $; Housing and food for term: 7000 $; Books and supplies: 800 $; Transport and personal cost: 1500 $; Term grants and aid: 4000 $. The modeled estimated semester funding gap is $14,000. These are example assumptions, not current prices, official benefit amounts or personalized advice.
Assumptions and real-world differences
Aid must refer to the same term and may be conditional or repayable. Loan proceeds are financing, not a grant; adding them to nonrepayable aid changes the interpretation of the remaining cost. School billing, eligible aid, indirect costs and living arrangements differ.
Reading the credit hours sensitivity table
The tool evaluates the same model across a range of credit hours values while holding other assumptions constant. Choose a realistic low value, high value and number of points. Each row reports the same headline measure; the table is a set of conditional calculations, not a probability distribution or a forecast. Input-step rounding can make nearby rows equal.

Frequently asked questions
- Should a full-year scholarship be entered for one semester?
- Only the portion applicable to the modeled term should be used; otherwise the funding gap can be understated.
- Which inputs should I check before using this education budget planner estimate?
- Check credit hours, tuition per credit, term fees, housing and food for term, books and supplies, transport and personal cost, term grants and aid. Match each field’s unit and time period, then compare the detailed rows rather than treating the headline alone as the complete answer.
- Does the most favorable row show the most likely outcome?
- No. The table assigns no likelihood to any row. It shows how the result responds to the chosen assumption, and you remain responsible for selecting a plausible range.
