Understanding tuition growth estimate — compare current annual tuition and fees

What this calculation is for
A tuition projection estimates the combined education cost over a program, not just the first bill. Tuition inflation, housing, annual aid and existing savings should be considered together before interpreting the borrowing gap.
How the method works
Tuition and room-and-board assumptions grow by the entered annual rate for each program year. Annual grants or scholarships reduce the modeled cost. Current education savings are then compared with the projected total to show a remaining funding gap.
A worked example
At a 4% annual increase, a $20,000 first-year expense becomes $20,800 in the second year before aid. An award quoted for one year should not automatically be entered as a guaranteed award for every year.
Assumptions and real-world differences
School-specific fees, residency, aid renewal conditions, program length and living arrangements can change costs. The model does not determine financial-aid eligibility, tax benefits, loan availability or a student’s earnings outcome. Loan interest requires a separate repayment calculation.
Comparing two current annual tuition and fees assumptions
The baseline and alternative calculations change current annual tuition and fees while keeping the remaining model inputs the same. This isolates that particular assumption rather than comparing two completely different plans. Read both detailed outcomes and the B-minus-A difference in the headline’s units. A larger number is not automatically better: a larger cost and a larger savings balance have opposite interpretations.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the funding gap an approved loan amount?
- No. It is a planning gap, not a borrowing offer or eligibility determination.
- Should I enter sticker price or net price?
- Use the named tuition and aid fields consistently; do not subtract a scholarship twice.
- Can I also change other assumptions in the alternative?
- This one-factor comparison deliberately holds them fixed. Use the two-scenario version when rates, costs, timing or several household inputs all differ.
