Understanding tuition growth estimate — sensitivity table

What this calculation is for
A tuition projection estimates the combined education cost over a program, not just the first bill. Tuition inflation, housing, annual aid and existing savings should be considered together before interpreting the borrowing gap.
How the method works
Tuition and room-and-board assumptions grow by the entered annual rate for each program year. Annual grants or scholarships reduce the modeled cost. Current education savings are then compared with the projected total to show a remaining funding gap.
A worked example
At a 4% annual increase, a $20,000 first-year expense becomes $20,800 in the second year before aid. An award quoted for one year should not automatically be entered as a guaranteed award for every year.
Assumptions and real-world differences
School-specific fees, residency, aid renewal conditions, program length and living arrangements can change costs. The model does not determine financial-aid eligibility, tax benefits, loan availability or a student’s earnings outcome. Loan interest requires a separate repayment calculation.
Reading the current annual tuition and fees sensitivity table
The tool evaluates the same model across a range of current annual tuition and fees values while holding other assumptions constant. Choose a realistic low value, high value and number of points. Each row reports the same headline measure; the table is a set of conditional calculations, not a probability distribution or a forecast. Input-step rounding can make nearby rows equal.

Sensitivity analysis: 5 comparison points
Current annual tuition and fees ranges from $9,000 to $27,000.
- Current annual tuition and fees: $9,000: $77,668.67
- Current annual tuition and fees: $13,500: $96,777.76
- Current annual tuition and fees: $18,000: $115,886.85
Frequently asked questions
- Is the funding gap an approved loan amount?
- No. It is a planning gap, not a borrowing offer or eligibility determination.
- Should I enter sticker price or net price?
- Use the named tuition and aid fields consistently; do not subtract a scholarship twice.
- Does the most favorable row show the most likely outcome?
- No. The table assigns no likelihood to any row. It shows how the result responds to the chosen assumption, and you remain responsible for selecting a plausible range.
